Getting ready for school

This whole week has been a bit hectic. All the kids have had their turn at being sick and, because of that, we have been home all week. The walls are closing in and its too hot to play outside -- instead of the average five days of over-100-degree weather, we are nearly at 70 days over 100 for this summer. Whew! I've about had enough and I'm ready to be able to send the kids outside without having to worry about heat stroke.

While the kids destroyed the house and constantly made messes played, I started working on the to-do list. Every year about this time, I'm in the mood to clean -- the pull-the-fridge-and-stove-out-and-mop kind of clean. It is another chance for me to have new year's resolutions since it is the start of the school year -- I make more to-do lists, I reprioritize my daily and weekly tasks, I take new classes and find new books to read. This week, we cleaned. We got out all the school supplies and got them ready to go. I sharpened all the pencils (colored and plain) that I had for the kids. The kids cleaned out their art and paper cabinet. Allen defrosted the minifridge and deep-freeze. I made a whole bunch of PBJ's for the freezer, bagged up the grapes and goldfish, and separated the cheese sticks so that lunches each morning could be made in 30-seconds or less. I made out the ten-day menu, went shopping, and got everything ready to go for the week. These are the little things that make my days go so much more smoothly.

Will and I had our alarms set for early each morning so we could get used to waking up early. Monday, we both hit snooze for about an hour. Tuesday, we were down to about 40 minutes. By Thursday, we were both close to being on time. Thursday evening, Will got to meet his second-grade teacher. Strangely, there is only one other person in his class who has ever been in his class before. Miriana is a friend of his from first grade, and Will seems to make friends pretty easily, so I'm not too worried about him being lonely.

I am ready for fall to head this way.
I am ready for school to start.
I am ready for us to have routines again.
I am ready to be able to grocery shop weekly...alone.
I am ready for the kids to get to play with friends again.
I am ready to have a few moments to myself each week.
I am ready to have my menus planned out according to our evening activities.
I am ready for the kids to have a consistently (earlier) bedtime.
I am ready to have a few minutes every so often to have coffee with a girlfriend.
I am ready for the kids to be at school so I can have lunch dates with Allen.
I am ready to enjoy my kids again.
I am ready.

Ben's Heartbeat

Ben was not feeling well, so I was checking to see if his lymph nodes were swollen -- sure enough, they were. After I tucked him in and left the room, he started feeling his neck to try to feel what I had. A few moments later, he came out of his room yelling for me to stop and feel again:
"Mama! Mama! Mama! I have Jesus in my heart! Feel the bump-bump in my neck?"
"Yes -- that's your pulse."
"No, Mama... That's Jesus's heart beating in mine!"
"Really?"
"Yeah. My heart says, 'bump,' and His heart says, 'bump.' It takes us both to say, 'bump-bump!'"

.... and that just about melted my own bump-bump.

Chefs in the Making?

Mama, we made our own lunch while you were on the phone.
We all got two breads and put barbeque sauce and potato salad on it with cheese. But the grapes are kinda healthy, too, and we even poured our own milks.
...at least they are learning to be a bit more independent AND they cleaned out the fridge. :)

Oh Happy Day!!

Oh happy day! Oh happy day!
Oh happy happy day!
Oh happy day!
When Jesus washed
Oh when he washed
When Jesus washed
He washed my sins away!
This summer, at Vacation Bible School, Will went forward during the invitation to ask Jesus into his heart. That was such a sweet day for me, and today was, too. A few weeks ago, Allen and I went with Will to a class that went over what it meant to be a Christian and to be baptized. We decided that it would be easiest for our family to attend if he was baptized during the children's baptism rather than during an early morning service. That meant that we were all able to gather around the baptism font, take pictures, and see easily as Allen baptized Will.
And He'll rejoice!
And He'll rejoice in things we say
And He'll rejoice in things we say
Things we say
Yes, things we say.
It was one of the sweetest moments seeing my son proclaim Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior as he was surrounded by friends and family: Miss Natalie (who taught Will's VBS class with me), Nana and Papa, Uncle Jason and Aunt Jenn, Beckham, Gramma and Granddad, Mama and Daddy, Ben, Maddie, and Jon. After the baptism, Allen tried to help Will get across the water, but Will pushed him away, held his breath, then went under the water to swim to the steps. There were quite a few stifled giggles for that move.
Oh happy day! Oh happy day!
Oh happy day! Oh happy day!
Oh happy day! Oh happy day!

Early Emergency

01:47 - Jon came downstairs and woke me up saying he couldn't breathe. His breathing sounded like a strange barking even without the coughing.

01:53 - Allen got up to help me get the breathing treatment going. Usually, Jon has had a cold for awhile before he needs breathing treatments, and this one just sounded a lot different than before.

01:55 - I tried to hurry, but I couldn't find all the parts to the nebulizer. Allen plugged one of the plastic pieces to the machine and the piece broke. I tried to stay calm as I sorted through the enormous baggie of spare parts.

01:57 - Ten minutes of watching Jon struggle for breath was excruciating, but we finally got the meds into him.

02:10 - After the treatment, his sternum still seems to be inverting as he struggles. At least he isn't turning blue, but this is pretty scary for me. We started a second treatment.

02:28 - After the second treatment, Allen tucked Jon into my bed and I got dressed and called the urgent care center. They told me to time his breathing to see if he was breathing more than 20 breaths per minute. Though Jon had already started dozing, he was taking one breath every 2 seconds -- they told me to bring him in.

02:40 - I took Allen's car in case Jon end up in the hospital (that way Allen would be able to drive the other three.) The light kept coming on saying the car is out of gas. I prayed that God would take care of us and get us to the ER safely, then decided not to look at the light again.

02:56 - I got Jon out of the car at the ER. He insisted on walking in instead of letting me carry him. (good news, right?)

02:58 - I signed giving permission for the docs to treat him, then the nurse started checking him out while I filled out all the forms. His oxygen levels were okay and I wonder if I've overreacted.

03:15 - The nurse gave Jon another breathing treatment, but it didn't help either. The doc listened to his chest while the nurse gave him a steroid. Doc said that Jon had stridor -- it sounds different than croup, and gets bad quickly. He said its a good thing we came in when we did.

03:28 - The nurse became one of Jon's newest friends when he gave him the remote to the TV. Jon and I were both thankful for Phineas & Ferb at 3:30am.
04:13 - Phineas & Ferb is still on. I was tired, Jon was wired. He was pretty energetic considering the insane time -- must be the steroid. The doctor told me that if this steroid doesn't work, he will try epinephren, but then we would be here a minimum of four hours. I prayed that we wouldn't have to stay so long; the chair is not comfortable enough to sit that long, and I don't have the energy to stand.

04:30 - Another episode of Phineas & Ferb.I tried to get comfortable in the uncomfortable chair, leaning my head on the bench table that Jon was resting on. Doc came in to recheck Jon. He is hopeful that the meds worked, but is afraid to send us home until he is certain. The nurse brought each of us a warm blanket.

05:20 - Chugginton is the cartoon on now. ‎"Stridor is a high pitched wheezing sound resulting from turbulent air flow in the upper airway. Stridor is a physical sign which is produced by narrow or obstructed airway path." ... Steroids + 3 breathing treatments + 2 hours = hyper little boy who can breathe. Doc came to check Jon again. Jon seems to be a lot better... breathing somewhat normally. Nurse comes back to sign us out and we are on the road.

05:39 - We drive a few feet to the gas station in the same parking lot. It is really creepy this late at night, so I don't fill it up all the way. I thanked God for a lot while I waited for the gas.

05:50 - On the way home, I continued to thank God and prayed I would stay awake until I got into my bed.

06:14 - I turned off my alarm clock, which was set to start singing in just a few minutes. Jon crashes on the pile of blankets on my floor and I sink into my own bed, hoping we can catch up on some of our missed sleep.

12:20 -  Survived, but I am still really sleepy. Jon was acting fine, offering to sweep the kitchen, wipe the bathroom counters, and is wanting me to do laundry so he can fold it -- definitely back to normal in the way he's acting.

Wasted

Right after the little kids came home from my parents, they kept fussing at me. As I was loading groceries into the refrigerator, they would fuss, "Mama, you're wasting the cold." When the water was on warming for a bath, they fussed some more, "Mama, you're wasting water." If I left the light on, they fussed, "Mama, you're wasting the electr-electr-electri... you're wasting the light."

I know when they were with my parents, they probably got a stern lecture about letting the cold air out when they'd leave the back door open. Or when they forgot to turn off the bathroom light. Or when they left the water dripping after washing their hands. I didn't think too much of it, and just told them they were right... I should be more careful with our resources.

But... there came a moment... when their fussing about wasting just about drove me over the edge....
I had been emptying the dishwasher.
I opened the cabinet to put up some plates.
I left it open while I got another armload of dishes.
Then Ben and Jon ran at me and fussed... "MAMA! You're wasting the shelf!"

Will's Time with Grandparents

This week Will stayed with my parents when the other kids came home. He spent time with both Granddad and Gramma. He fished, learned to roller skate to earn a Cub Scout belt loop, spent one-on-one time with Granddad, talked about different science topics, worked jigsaw puzzles with Gramma, went bird watching and fished some more. The lakes are so low that Will was happy when he finally caught a catfish. Allen rearranged his work schedule so that he could go get Will and spend some time with him. That Saturday, Allen taught Will to whittle with his scout knife, then they toured the Dr Pepper Museum before heading home.
