We headed out for our road-trip vacation around nine yesterday morning. We had a few planned stops for gas and lunch, but, thankfully, we didn't have any emergency potty stops. We arrived in Lubbock around 4:00pm, just in time to stop in and surprise my Uncle Jake. He was happy to finally meet Ben, Maddie, and Jon, and to see Will again. We didn't stay too long, but we were there long enough that Uncle Jake gave us a tour of his workshop and had Will help him find a tool. Talk about a time warp! As he directed my kids to find the right part in the right drawer, it was a flash back to when I was that size trying to help him find the right tool.
After visiting with Uncle Jake, we took the kids to one of our favorite restaurants from our college days, and we enjoyed gyros and baklava. Then we headed across town to our hotel, ran to Walmart for a few forgotten things, then let the kids show off their new swimming skills for about 30 minutes before we headed to bed. This morning, we headed over to see my Aunt Kathy after breakfast. We coordinated this stop with my cousin Mike since none of us had met his six-year old daughter, Elizabeth, and Kathy and Mike had not met our younger ones. All of us had a really good time -- I caught up with my family, and Mike and I reminisced about some of the fun times from our childhoods (like when he and I tried to figure out if a fence at the Stanton farm was electrified.) Elizabeth and Maddie played tea party the entire morning, with Mike and Kathy alternating who got to clean up the spilled "tea" (water). Allen and Mike played Kinect after all of us got to try it, and the boys enjoyed the plasma car, dress up hats, and foam swords. We had a lot of fun, then went out for lunch together before we headed west again.
The kids were mostly worn out after a busy morning of playing, and they slept for awhile as we drove toward Las Vegas, New Mexico. We arrived there just before dinner-time, and met Allen parents and grandmother at a the home of a family friend. We went to dinner with Grandma Ann, then got everyone in bed early.
