Allen's Uncle Robert and Aunt Barbara have built a lovely cabin on the Pecos River. We arrived just before the rain started falling on Sunday afternoon. After we unloaded the car and got the home-tour, we sat on the porch until the storm stopped, then we sat by the river and relaxed a bit while the kids explored and got their feet wet in the icy water. Right from the start, our kids were having fun with Robert and Barbara's grandkids -- 8-year old Sophia and 10-year old Sevy. The fun kept going and going and going, long after we told them to turn off the lights and go to sleep.
Monday, July 4th, was a big family day. Allen parents and Grandma Ann had spent the night, so they were already there. Later in the day, Grammie and Ruffy (Allen's other grandparents) arrived, and so did more of Robert and Barbara's grandkids (ages 4, 6, and 14). Lots of family! The day was full of fun and food -- in fact, our kids were amazed at the constant buffet of tasty treats. Robert, Randy, and Allen tied some tube rafts to ropes and let the kids drift down stream a bit before dragging them back. That went on until Allen convinced me to get in one. Then it wasn't too much longer till he and I hiked upstream with a couple rafts. The kids were all surprised to see us coming down the river, and we were anxious to take them on the same journey. The water was so cold, but I couldn't help but get wet as I did my best to stay in the raft as I wiggled across the shallow parts. All four of our kids, plus all the other young ones, came down the river with us at least once. The boys' favorite part was going under the tree that had fallen across the river. Maddie and Jon napped that afternoon and woke up to even more food. There were no fireworks that night -- partly because we were in the middle of nowhere, partly because of the fire (and fireworks) ban in the Santa Fe National Forest where we were. Nonetheless, our Fourth of July was still typical -- lots of family and posed family pictures.
Today (Tuesday), we woke up to a much smaller crowd. We enjoyed Robert's really awesome pancakes (made with blue corn and pinenuts) then Sophia and Sevy went home with their dad. Our four enjoyed playing "restaurant" and "store" with Great Aunt Barbara, and Allen and I sat and visited with Robert and Barbara until after lunch. I wish we could have stayed a bit longer at this peaceful place, but we had more adventures waiting for us. We made tentative plans to return in two years with all the kids and cousins again. Now, on to Santa Fe -- about 30 minutes away.
